School Profile

Abbotsford Full Primary is a decile 7 school with a mixture of students ranging in age from 5 – 13 years.  Children come to school with a range of experiences.

The school is located close to Dunedin city and can be accessed off the Southern Motorway.

Each year an annual intake of approximately 40 new entrants leads to a stable roll of 260-290 students, of whom 7% are identified as Maori.

The school community has high expectations for student achievement and this is fostered by a well qualified competent staff, and supportive parent community.

For all enrolments both new entrants and transfers, please request an information package from our office.

An Enrolment Scheme is in place at Abbotsford School.

May enter grounds  at 8-30am  (when bell rings)

School starts at 9-00am

Morning: Tea 10-00am 10-15am                                    

Mini Break:  11-20am  to 11-30am

Lunch: 12-30pm  to 1-15pm

School finishes: 2-50pm  

 

Code of Ethics

This is a code whereby parents who are involved  at the school respect the confidentiality of any information they may be privy to while at the school.

 

Wednesday Wonderland

Wednesday Wonderland is a preparation for  school programme for 4 year olds, in the classroom on Wednesday afternoons.  Children can come accompanied by an adult to do fun learning activities that will assist them in their transition to school.

Abbots Korner

Abbots Korner provides before and after school care, where the aim is to provide quality care in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.  The morning session is from 7.15 - 8.30, and the afternoon session is from 2.50 - 5.30.  Abbots Korner is held in the rooms off the School Hall.

 

 

School Rules

 Forbidden Items

Sweets - including chewing gum. 

Toys - while we know children are attached to certain toys and want to show them to their friends, we cannot ensure the security of prized possessions—please keep toys at home.

Personal Technology - Technology such as I Pods, Cameras, MP3 players, Cell phones  etc are only permitted at school with Mrs Grant’s permission and they are to be kept in her office during the day.  Otherwise they will be confiscated and only returned to a parent, not to a child.

Dangerous items - knives etc.

Make Up

Jewellery - girls and boys may only wear stud earrings, and signet rings.  No necklaces,     bangles, bracelets etc.

Money -  Apart from that necessary for lunch, stationery, trips.   

Please put all money into named envelopes.

                                                      

General Behaviour

Courtesy, good manners, politeness and consideration for others is expected from all children, towards children and adults.

Property belonging to other people is to be treated with respect and care, this includes the school grounds, trees, shrubs etc.

 

Classroom Behaviour Statements

Each classroom has a discipline plan, which is reviewed annually.  A copy of this plan is sent home with each child.

 

Leaving School Grounds

No child is allowed to leave the school during school hours without the express permission of the teacher, or a note from parents/caregivers. 

When leaving these children must be collected from the classroom.

 

Riding Bikes & Scooters

Children may not ride to school on Bikes or Scooters until they are 9 years old, and all children must wear safety helmets.

Absences

Please advise the office before school starts of absences by using the telephone absence line.  Parents will be contacted should a child not arrive at school on time.

Health Nurse:  Contact can be made by telephoning the school.

 

Board of Trustees

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of the month at 5.30pm in the staffroom.  

The Parent Committee is a group of volunteer parents that actively fundraise for the school to improve the school environment and resources.

 

Uniforms

Abbotsford School has a uniform policy and all children must wear the correct uniform every day.  All uniform items may be purchased throught the school office.  Second hand sales are available.  A sun hat is supplied by the school and is part of the uniform and must be left at school at all times.  There is a cost for this.

Swimming Pool

Keys are available for the season of approximately November to April.

 

Community Hall

This is available for hire.

School Fees/Donations

The BOT sets an annual donation amount.  Donations are very much appreciated and needed for those extra activities.

For Year 7-8, an account is sent out at the beginning of the year to cover the costs of goods used at Technology.

Year 7 & 8 attend Technology at Taieri College once a week. 

Throughout the year various School Trips are made to venues outside the school by bus/private transport.  A permission form for all trips is requested at the time of enrolment, and then an advice notice and a request will be made for entry fee, parent help, bus fare etc.

 

Stationery

All stationery is available at a very reasonable cost from the office.

 

Interviews/Learning Journals

All students at Abbotsford School will receive 2 written reports on their progress and achievement during each year of their schooling at Abbotsford School. All parents will have the opportunity to have at least one oral interview with their child’s teacher during each school year.

Junior School :

A Learning Journal will be the vehicle to report student’s achievement and progress in years 1-3. The journal will be cumulative over the first 3 years of school. Included in the Learning Journal will be mid-point summaries and summaries for after 1, 2, and 3 years at school. The Learning Journal will be sent home following interviews with parents.

Interview and reporting times will be determined by when the students started school. There will be an initial interview within approximately the first month of starting school and then approximately every six months after that until the students have completed their first year at school.

Senior School :

All students in years 4-8 will receive 2 written reports on their learning progress and achievement each school year.

There will be an oral interview mid-year in conjunction with the mid- year report on the student’s progress and achievement.

The second written report will be sent home with students in the last week of term 4.

 

Banking

With Westpac Trust each Wednesday.

 

Newsletters

Sent home weekly on a Thursday with the oldest in each family.  They are also posted on this website.

As our newsletter is online, it is important that parents are aware that from time to time their children’s name or photo may appear.  Should they not be happy with this, please advise the school immediately in writing.

 

Lunch Orders

Subway lunches are available every Thursday. Orders are placed in the Subway envelopes (available from the office or classrooms) with money, and left at the school office on Thursday mornings. Children collect their Subway orders from the school office at the start of lunchtime.

 

Library

Books may be borrowed, taken home, and returned under teacher’s supervision.

Homework

Homework is part of the process of education.  We invite parents to support the children in any work they may bring home.  As outlined in the homework policy, we request that parent’s sign work and contact the class teacher if there are difficulties.
